1996 at the Movies: THINNER

Twenty-five years of Stephen King asking us to sympathize with an ungrateful husband.

Here at SOBER CINEMA we are nothing if not sex positive. And sometimes we also talk about movies. This time it's the 1996 classic on oral pleasure amongst married individuals in Stephen King's THINNER. Enjoy it with a large meal.

1996 at the Movies: SLEEPERS

Twenty-five years since Kevin Bacon ordered the wrong dinner.

And made some other mistakes along the way. Thankfully a cast of movie stars such as Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Billy Crudup and... Ron Eldard (?) fix the glitch of Barry Levinson's SLEEPERS. Then everything is as it should be again.

We only avoid the plot of this film in show notes because it would make for terrible SEO so instead let's mention our love for Minnie Driver here. Especially in GROSSE POINTE BLANK. The rest of it... enjoy?

1996 at the Movies: THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS

Twenty-five years of Val Kilmer playing Home Alone in Africa...

...and still being more ridiculous than Macaulay Culkin. But not in a fun Christmas classic sort of way. More of a not-so-classic white savior trope.

And normally we like that sort of thing here at SOBER CINEMA. But not this time! For there is no hand to hand combat with these lions. Only endless monologues and failure. Tom Wilkinson gets a pass for being a huge ass but everyone else in this movie turns us back to more BOUND discussion from our previous episode.

Because we may not be an expert on lions, but lesbians... Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: BOUND

Twenty-five years of back and to the left with this Wachowskis caper.

Apologies to Joey Pants but only one host has the appropriate appreciation for Ms. Tilly and Ms. Gershon's efforts in this gift from heaven in the barren wasteland that is cinema of 1996.

Or you could listen to the idiot that loved CHAIN REACTION. Unfortunately you have to (only so much can be improved in the edit) but we eventually talk about the importance of a disciplined crew and which of these two lovely ladies would be the most relaxed on set.

It's all very above board because AGAIN... only one host here is not impotent. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: 2 DAYS IN THE VALLEY

Twenty-five years of still being creeped out by James Spader being that close to Charlize Theron.

The one thing we can all be grateful for when it comes to this mid90s Tarantino ripoff is that it gave Ms. Theron her start.

And the world was a better place.

We spend about half the episode on this fact and eventually make our way to a more titillating look at sad sacks in the valley with Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece BOOGIE NIGHTS. As it should be, Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: THE FIRST WIVES CLUB

Twenty-five years of Stockard Channing being an unfortunate inspiration.

The hosts of SOBER CINEMA were initially concerned about being two middle-aged men picking on older women... until this box-office hit from 1996 did it for us. But just to cover our bases we brought on the world's biggest Diane Keaton fan in Derek Stewart of THE GRAND GESTURE podcast and unfortunately for him he meets a new superfan of Bette Midler. Also Goldie Hawn. She's done well for herself. She slept with Kurt Russell.

But this isn't an episode about men! It's just 100% male voices. A movie podcast. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: FEELING MINNESOTA

Twenty-five years of Keanu being confused.

And why wouldn't he be by the uncomfortable shifts in tone in this mid90s Tarantino ripoff? However we have bigger questions, SUCHAS:

  • How dirty does a bathroom have to be before you wouldn't have sex with Cameron Diaz in it?
  • Does it matter if said bathroom has been used more than once (though once is enough) by the bug from MEN IN BLACK?
  • And back to the bathroom business... one host is ready to answer in the affirmative even if it's the stall from TRAINSPOTTING.

We are all disgusted.

1996 at the Movies: SWINGERS

Yes, this is kind of like Vince Vaughn unpausing the Sega Genesis game of hockey...

...but if we didn't cover HAPPY GILMORE then we most certainly were not talking Adam Sandler's lesser known 1996 comedy BULLETPROOF. Unlike that wide release Jon Favreau and friends were making the festival circuit in fall of 96 and your hosts of SOBER CINEMA were nowhere near it.

For one host it would be stumbling across this gem on cable.

For another host it was the above host quoting this movie incessantly and ruining the whole thing.

And for yet another host he believes he lived SWINGERS during his single days in Miami. His name is Jairo. He is an idiot.

Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: THE TRIGGER EFFECT

We prepare for the breakdown of society caused by confusing Dermot Mulroney with Dylan McDermott.

As 2020 proved... nothing can be agreed upon ESPECIALLY with the talents of Ms. Shue standing in between with her futile attempts at mediation in David Koepp's THE TRIGGER EFFECT.

Along the way we learn about the inherent madness of participating in one host's homeowner's association and perhaps less strangely the participation of auteur David Cronenberg in a Tom Arnold comedy called THE STUPIDS.

This episode is illuminating.

1996 at the Movies: THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU

This is an episode about blowholes.

And penile implants.

Also it's sometimes about John Frankenheimer's bullpen assignment for the Val Kilmer starring THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU.

Two boys lost all faith in cinema that day while somewhere in Peru... a man wanted to become a bigger man. Enjoy!
