1996 at the Movies: THE FAN

Wesley Snipes vs. Robert De Niro in a movie that is not HEAT.

It's also not SEVEN.

Or even THE SANDLOT.

It just stinks.

And we'd rather be watching Tony Scott's THE HUNGER.

But that also goes for every movie.

Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: JACK

Francis Ford Coppola apologized for the third GODFATHER with... JACK.

And we never knew how good we had it with Sofia Coppola's acting until we saw a much beloved comedian facing impending death and impending baldness in a film now relegated to terrifying children on Disney Plus.

But back in 1996 we were innocent. And then Bill Cosby walked onscreen as a mentor to a ten year old kid with the sexual desires of a forty year old.

On that day we turned into men. Deviant men. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: CHAIN REACTION

Twenty-five years of Michael Shannon being The Pride of Chicago.

That may be a bit misleading but one of our hosts named Jairo is an idiot. He attempts an overcorrection by praising the followup to THE FUGITIVE from auteur Andrew Davis in the Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz on the run movie about some science stuff. Morgan Freeman uses that great voice to try to talk Keanu down from the public fat shaming that never came for his girth in this film while Ms. Weisz waits for SPEED to drag her around to the next set piece.

It's not much fun. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: A TIME TO KILL

Twenty-five years of choosing Ashley Judd over Sandra Bullock...

...along with some other tragedies in Joel Schumacher's adaptation of John Grisham's A TIME TO KILL. The finest film podcast from the South have a few notes to give the filmmakers:

  • We accept all cast members sweating profusely EXCEPT for Brenda Fricker.
  • More Oliver Platt.
  • Less Kevin Spacey.
  • More Olvier Platt sweating. PROFUSELY.

All of this and more as one Florida Man schools two Kentuckians on just why this film represents The Nipple of the South. And we avoid any talk of race relations. It's for the best.

1996 at the Movies: TRAINSPOTTING

Twenty-five years of borrowing videotapes from your mates that have the same results as THE RING.

As three upstanding citizens we don't have much experience with the drug culture as presented in this Danny Boyle film... but we do know a thing or two about taking movies from your buddy's highly cultivated collection. With that in mind we feel free to condemn one of the most well regarded cinematic experiences of 1996 as well as one host being rather insistent of his fandom for one cast member who would go on to star in BOARDWALK EMPIRE.

Also a hatred of short people. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: COURAGE UNDER FIRE

Twenty-five years of Denzel Washington not taking sass from Lou Diamond Phillips.

Also Matt Damon got skinny. Uncomfortably skinny.

We try to be respectful of our military on the silver screen but then Bronson Pinchot shows up and we just give up. And in the end it's Sean Astin's fault. As it always would be.

1996 at the Movies: PHENOMENON

Twenty-five years of John Travolta being the smartest guy in the room.

And yet... everyone still hates him. This includes one of our hosts who maintains his unnatural rage anytime he sees this great actor on screen. Unfortunately that includes this Capraesque film from 1996 that is about a small town man who just wants to solve simple problems. Usually involving animal excrement to fix cars. Also he holds hands with Kyra Sedgwick. It's a joyous episode of SOBER CINEMA!

1996 at the Movies: STRIPTEASE

Twenty-five years of Annie Lennox killing STRIPTEASE for us all.

This is it. The entire reason we are covering the year of 1996 in film. And all we have to show for it is:

  • One of our co-hosts (his name is Jairo) ruining the official SOBER CINEMA group text thread with an image of himself in a bathtub.
  • One of our co-hosts (Jairo again) insisting on doing his Burt Reynolds impression talking about "feeling it in his boots" as a once great man is now covered in Vaseline.
  • And also one co-host (still Jairo, of course) bringing up Demi Moore's powerlifting abilities while also disparaging Moore's daughter for ruining the powerlifting performance.

But we applaud Demi getting paid. We just wish the movie was better.

And less Annie Lennox music. We don't ask for much.

1996 at the Movies: ERASER

Twenty-five years of James Caan's moving parts.

We didn't remember much about Arnold Schwarzenegger's last hurrah as an action star but ERASER somehow managed to provide us room to provide the definitive guesswork on the motivations of James Cromwell in this film:

  • Upset with James Caan's nipples.
  • Upset with Vanessa Williams' ability to burn a CD.
  • Upset with Arnold Schwarzenegger's antics with a CGI alligator.

As we said. DEFINITIVE.

1996 at the Movies: THE CABLE GUY

Twenty-five years of obscene word games with Matthew Broderick's family.

The above is not the only sin Jim Carrey committed as THE CABLE GUY, one of the "bombs" of 1996 that accomplished the goal of revealing all of the buzzkills in our society. Such as:

  • Those that don't appreciate a deluxe home entertainment as a friendly gift.
  • Or an arranged date with a lady of the night.
  • Or warm eggs lovingly prepared by a new best friend.

In honor of no buzzkills ruining Ben Stiller's comedy masterpiece... our co-host Jairo was not allowed to attend this recording. Enjoy!
