1992 at the Movies Begins with KUFFS

Thirty years of confusion about how one becomes an officer of the law in the Bay Area.

And this film starring early 90s It Girl Milla Jovovich does nothing to illuminate us on civilianauxiliary police (but thank you Wikipedia for the hyperlink!) so we resort to our kickoff of 1992 in film by attacking each other.

Being noble historians of cinema is stressful work but we hope you enjoy another season of SOBER CINEMA!

1996 at the Movies Ends with MICHAEL

Twenty-five years of Andie MacDowell singing about pie.

As disgusted as we are with the auteur behind YOU'VE GOT MAIL in this Christmas release from 1996 we still take the time to discuss the important things.

Like Joey Lauren Adams' voice. Or Bob Hoskins as Wolverine. And of course... a look back at our weekly selections at the movies of 1996. Spoiler alert: it ends up being a battle between the obvious choices of HEAVEN'S PRISONERS and CHAIN REACTION.

Onto the year of cinema in 1992 in 2022!

1996 at the Movies: SCREAM

Twenty-five years of questioning the viability of Rose McGowan escaping through the garage door. For science.

You will never hear a forty-something year old man talk more about Skeet Ulrich than on this podcast.

Terrifying.

Happy Scream Day!

1996 at the Movies: JERRY MAGUIRE

Twenty-five years of Jay Mohr ever so briefly having power over Tom Cruise.

When one thinks of the Cameron Crowe classic JERRY MAGUIRE... the infamous VALLEY OF THE DOLLS does not come to mind.

Except on SOBER CINEMA.

Yes, yes, we pay all proper respects to what is likely our most enjoyable watch of 1996... but it stills comes down to boobs. As it always would.

Enjoy.

1996 at the Movies: EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU

Twenty-five years of listening to actors who can't sing do just that.

But that's not really the problem here. It's two Kentucky hillbillies and the International Man of Mystery from Peru trying to understand the plight of the wealthy whites as often seen in Mr. Allen's filmography. Also the underage women (hello Ms. Natalie Portman) that are usually involved in the Woodmeister's films.

Dangerous territory. But we are brave enough to tackle such things and also yet again mention the greatness of Nick Nolte in A WALK IN THE WOODS. You're welcome, Film Twitter.

1996 at the Movies: THE CRUCIBLE

Twenty-five years of Daniel Day-Lewis yelling.

Joan Allen puts up with a lot in this flick. The lack of adequate dental care. A husband with a wandering eye. A young up and comer smearing her face with chicken blood and placing curses on you. And then... not even welcome at church.

It's a party in THE CRUCIBLE. Enjoy.

1996 at the Movies: SLING BLADE

Twenty-five years of waking up to the roommate from the garage holding a hammer over your bed.

In what is our most important episode of 1996 we discuss the many merits of Billy Bob Thornton's SLING BLADE:

  • Was John Ritter's version of the hight and tight a bold move in mid 90s Arkansas?
  • Dwight Yoakam's drunk boyfriend is a man of many moods when imbibing. He contains multitudes.
  • How many weeks old are the underwear that Robert Duvall wears in his silent confrontation from his command post of the recliner?

It is most assuredly our greatest episode ever. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES

Twenty-five years of Barbara Streisand not being Michelle Pfeiffer.

And that's just fine with two thirds of the hosts on this podcast. Rita Kempley of The Washington Post... well she had some harsh words for The Barbara.

No matter. We can't all be Catwoman and in this film that's not what Mr. Bridges wants in a romantic partner. This opens the door for your hosts to try and figure out what exactly they want in a partner. If that partner happened to be Ms. Streisand.

We come to no conclusions. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: RANSOM

Twenty-five years of Lieutenant Dan hating Nick Nolte's kid.

Delroy Lindo returns to the podcast from his rousing performance in FEELING MINNESOTA to once again be the voice of reason.

Unfortunately he is trying to coach Mel Gibson... who has his own hangups. BUT as a movie podcast that hates children and mostly tolerates the films we select, a story about a father seeing a chance to not lose millions of dollars while ALSO losing his child? Intriguing.

Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: ROMEO + JULIET

Twenty-five years of passing on Claire Danes. Because that is legal and right.

However when she got to HOMELAND her crazy face was just the medicine three old men needed BUT let's get to less dangerous ground. Like the curiosity that was Dash Mihok's career.

That was weird.

A cat fight between John Leguizamo and Harold Perrineau?

Not weird at all. Also Leo is in this too. Enjoy!
