1996 at the Movies: THE PHANTOM

Twenty-five years of white saviors in purple spandex.

Okay, so maybe it was more like one terrible opening weekend for that particular superhero trope and for that we lay the blame all around for the auteur Simon Wincer's summer blockbuster that wasn't:

  • Treat Williams being bad... but not bad enough as the villain.
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones being sidelined to a volume shooter off the bench.
  • And Kristy Swanson's strange fascination with Jon Lovitz which we didn't know at the time... but we could tell that there was something off about her in 1996.

All of that and a discussion on white privilege from two whites in regards to a movie with the ultimate leading man of the whites, Billy Zane!
