1996 at the Movies: BROKEN ARROW

February 9, 1996 was a time for John Travolta to replace Christian Slater with Howie Long and we get it.

Twenty-five years of embracing John Travolta's hyper-masculinity.

John Woo brought his over-the-top sensibilities to mainstream American success with BROKEN ARROW (never mind the earlier HARD TARGET) and landed right in the middle of the John Travolta renaissance. Unfortunately he paired this mugging masterpiece of a performance with fuddy-duddies like Christian Slater (PUMP UP THE VOLUME baby) as unbelievably his kickboxing sparring partner, Samantha Morton (also of the great PUMP UP THE VOLUME) as the world's best park ranger, and Frank Whaley as an ROTC DORK.

Thankfully SOBER CINEMA is here to make this a true two hander with Travolta and his main man Howie Long hanging out with phallic symbols in the desert.
