1996 at the Movies: A THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE

Twenty-five years of Martin Lawrence stroking his ego by writing, directing and starring in a comedic FATAL ATTRACTION.

As hard as the above sentence is to believe... one of your hosts actually enjoyed these shenanigans from Mr. Lawrence.

In particular the part where either himself or his property is assaulted for his scoundrel ways. But we think that was the point. On the other hand this same host finds GONE GIRL to be an aspirational look at marriage. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: FLIRTING WITH DISASTER

Twenty-five years of sex comedies where the best the ladies can do is Josh Brolin licking their armpit.

And so with that in mind, we show the same amount of respect to Ben Stiller and company in 1996's FLIRTING WITH DISASTER. A film where all manner of swapping is taking place... but Richard Jenkins finds no shelter from the storm.

Except here on SOBER CINEMA. And it should go without saying that this does a great man such as Mr. Jenkins absolutely no good. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: EXECUTIVE DECISION

Twenty-five years of celebrating Steven Seagal learning how to fly.

In perhaps the biggest deep dive in SOBER CINEMA history we discuss John Leguizamo as one of our favorite trash talkers, Marla Maples as our favorite Trump wife and the importance of all hosts being vaccinated as we continue our journey through the movies of 1996.

Not-So-Sober Cinema: ARMY OF THE DEAD

Two months later and America looks like it's hell-bent on shutting down Las Vegas again.

So we change our late summer vacation plans and stay inside... just as Netflix likes (although we must admit other factors were in play) and see what Drax can do when his oddly-shaped head takes on zombies both of the slow and fast-moving variety.

We also lay claim to our new American prince and princess in Harry and Meghan. Sorry-not-sorry to the United Kingdom and Canada.

Actually we like Canada.

We don't much like ARMY OF THE DEAD. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: FARGO

Twenty-five years of awkward criminals, awkward high school reunions and three men awkwardly discussing the merits of a pregnant Frances McDormand.

FARGO comes to SOBER CINEMA's retrospective of 1996 at the movies as one of the Best Picture nominees... and that's not good enough for one host. Wishing he could go back to the salad days of BOTTLE ROCKET finds your least favorite podcasters wondering if there can be no satisfaction, much less happiness, when it comes to watching movies from a quarter century ago.

This podcast is not Minnesota nice. Enjoy.

Not-So-Sober Cinema: THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD

Almost two months after Jon Bernthal was beaten up in up in another Taylor Sheridan joint.

This episode starts (strangely) with a little HE-MAN talk, moves on to the merits of The Boy from ABOUT A BOY as a lazy hitman and then we break up Taylor Sheridan's no-hitter. Or rather his latest film THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD does that for him.

It did nothing for us.

But for you, dear listener... well, now you have this podcast. Enjoy!

1996 at the Movies: UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

Twenty-five years of one movie star eating the lens and the other movie star eating... something else.

Ignoring the advice of Michael Douglas we encourage the bedroom shenanigans of Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert Redford in UP CLOSE & PERSONAL. That's about all we are enthusiastic about though as we ponder the difficulty of an illiterate person choosing a career solely based on reading off a prompter, the office politics of borrowing another person's desk for lovemaking and choosing an alternate professional path... the far sexier filming of general appliances.

It goes without saying that this is the greatest podcast ever produced on UP CLOSE & PERSONAL. Dedicated to lovers.

Not-So-Sober Cinema: WRATH OF MAN

A month after Jason Statham went undercover as a transporter (but not THE transporter) surrounded by desperate bros.

Guy Ritchie has never been known for subtlety and our hosts find themselves charmed by the neediness of other men to have Mr. Statham's approval in the new to video-on-demand WRATH OF MAN. Speaking of neediness, your hosts finally made their way back to the theater to catch this one (the auteur of KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD deserves such respect) and by god they were going to like it.

1996 at the Movies: MARY REILLY

Twenty-five years of America's sweetheart looking sad and rightfully so in MARY REILLY.

Julia Roberts gets down in the mucky muck by playing a maid to John Malkovich and Hollywood's version of his monstrous alter ego... which is just John Malkovich with longer hair and no tact. On this episode we pine for the days when Ms. Roberts had a less icky screen role, say as a prostitute or even Hugh Grant's lover. All manner of sins which she has done in her service as a genuine movie star, but THIS... this was too much for the American public in 1996 and it has not become any sexier since.

Even with hair, Mr. Malkovich. Even with hair.

Not-So-Sober Cinema: THINGS HEARD & SEEN

Less than a week after Amanda Seyfried invites us into her gaslit home.

Some actors form a bond with their fans that can never be broken. No matter what Netflix original crap comes our way... we will always have CHLOE, our dear Ms. Seyfried.

THINGS HEARD & SEEN... is no CHLOE. It is however a new film that involves a husband part that was dying for the charm and magnificent mugging of one Patrick Wilson. Alas, we are left with a dry ghost story that has us at times rooting for (yet again) the gaslighting of a good woman just so maybe our beloved Chloe (I mean, Seyfried) can escape this crap situation and move beyond the modern straight to video model of Netflix movies.

But today is not that day. Instead... you get a new episode of SOBER CINEMA.
